Despite the high obesity rates making national news, a leading scientist has claimed that Brits are currently living longer than ever before. The average life expectancy in the UK has increased to a total of eight years since the 1970’s.People in Britain generally live a couple of years longer than Americans whose average life expectancy is 78.4 years.
Professor David Leon of the London School of hygiene and tropical medicine said that the increasing life expectancy means that Brits are obviously eating healthier than ever and caring for their physical well-being. However, the professor doesn’t feel confident that the life expectancy for young Brits will remain due to the current obesity epidemic.
Professor Leon said in conclusion that life expectancy in Europe generally has been improving for the first time in decades while life expectancy in the East remains low in comparison with the west.
